They went into Dirty Deeds and Thunderstruck, which both went over big with the crowd yet again. Angus did a little guitar doodle intro to Thunderstruck (similar to Toronto 2003), but was definitely slower and more deliberate than he used to play it back in 90/91. It still sounded great though, and the crowd was loving it. I missed the light show from the Stiff Upper Lip tour though; this time around, it was pretty mellow and tame compared to back then.
Black Ice was next. The crowd's reaction seemed like they didn't know what to do. They kind of lost the energy that they had built up until then a little bit, even though they played it very well. I personally didn't really like the album version that well until after I had heard it a few times. The tempo is odd for the band and it's just a bit tougher to get into the rhythm unlike many of their other songs. The live version sounds good to me though, so I really enjoyed seeing them play it. They moved into The Jack and the strip tease next. While I've never been a huge fan of The Jack at live shows, it worked well this time around. Having the strip tease during this song worked better for me as there was something to do while they were playing such a slow song. We got to watch Angus run around and do his thing, so I didn't have a problem with that. If they have to play a slow song, there may as well be a reason for it otherwise it kills the momentum of the show. It just works for me this way, don't ask me why. Brian also took a couple swigs of a fan's beer on the runway as he was working the crowd, which just made the crowd like him that much more. He really comes off as just 'one of us' while he's up there. One funny thing to note is that rather than showing some hot, young POA's on the video screen like in the past, they were showing some older, more 'mature' women on the screen. It was pretty funny when they realized they were on the screen and could actually tell the exact moment when it dawned on them what the song was about.
One of the highlights of the show came next, that being Hells Bells. In the past, they seemed to play it at a faster tempo. This killed the feel of the song for me from the original version, as it was meant to be more of a tribute to Bon. They seemed to take their time during this one though, and it brought back more of the original feeling of the album version. It really sounded good, and Brian did his bell swinging thing at the start, although he had trouble getting his foot into the loop to start with when they pulled it up into the air a bit. He got it after a bit and played it off like it was nothing.
Shoot to thrill was next. They were on top of this one as well and were really fired up. Angus was definitely a step slower than he used to be right at the beginning, but it sounded great. I had a bit of trouble about half way through as one of the security guys must have noticed me filming. It probably wasn't hard to see as I stand out in a crowd, but he was cool about it. He worked his way down the aisle and just said to put it away, rather than taking the camera, memory card or kicking me out all together. I got teased a bit from the drunk chick next to me for getting busted, but I was ok with it. I was still in the show, and I still had the H2 recording. I didn't realize it at the time, but the security guard was just about staring at it when he tapped me on the arm. I had a simple harness rigged up for it to hang around my neck, so I could have easily gotten nailed for that as well. I counted my blessings, slipped the video camera into my pocket and continued to enjoy the show.
