In the past, the members have been asked for donations to help offset the costs of running and maintaining the site. All costs are covered by the owner of the site, so any donations in the past were extremely helpful. Although they definitely helped with the costs, I never felt quite right about accepting money for doing something I enjoy so much. With the re-design of the site, I was able to remove the donations page and install an advertising system instead that would help cover the costs of the site and keep the members from having to donate their money.
So that's the reasoning behind the advertisements on the left side of just about every page. These ads help make money which is then used to cover the costs of hosting the site, as well as other items that are related to this site and acdc-videos.com Currently, there are 2 types of advertisements: member defined and Ads by Google.
Member Defined
These ads are placed directly by members of this site that wish to advertise to the rest of the members. The single ad at the top of the advertisements section on the left of each page is where the member defined ads are located. This single ad is randomly displayed one time on each page view. Impressions (views) and clicks are stored and viewable in a custom tool assigned to you once your ad is in place so you can track your ROI. You can either provide a link for the click to take the user to, or a custom form can be added which will add another step to your tracking and also allow you to track your conversions.
At the moment, any subject is allowed that is within reasonable subject matter. This is a site for a rock and roll band, so things are bound to get a bit rowdy. Pricing is not set yet, but will most likely range from $25 - $50 per month. I'm always willing to deal, so trades are welcome in either services or material goods. Talk to me and we can most likely work something out.
Most of the ads currently in this section link to Amazon.com and were placed by myself, which also ties back to making money for this site. For the Amazon ads placed on my account, I receive a commission for each sale made so if you need something from Amazon, click away!
Below is a screen shot of the actual statistics from the pre-order for 'Plug Me In' advertisment I ran for approximately a month. This is a screen shot of the custom tool that is available once you purchase an ad.
This ad was in place from Sep 8, 2007 to Oct 15, 2007 (just over 1 month). This ad finished before user clicks were recorded, although that system is in place now.

This Google system is what is displayed the member defined ads on each page. These ads are generated by keywords, and the site makes money for each click that is made on one of them. This is the best way to help the site out, as all you have to do is click on any ad and the site makes money. Simple as that. So instead of me begging for donations every year, you have the choice to click on an ad that will help this site out immensely. The value of these clicks range from 1 to 25 cents or so per click, so if feel like it, click away! The subjects of the links are based on page content, so sometimes they may not related directly to the band. Either way, if you click, you'll help the site.
Why Advertisements?
As I sad above, I really felt bad about accepting donations. Not that we got too many, but the ones we did get normally came from everyday people that may or may not have had a lot of extra cash on hand. I wanted to keep from making everyone hand out their hard-earned money, so I figured this is the easiest way. Thanks for your support!
